Sunnen is the technological leader for high precision gun barrel honing of all types of hand gun and rifle barrels. Honing dramatically improves surface finish, roundness and diameter consistency throughout the length of the barrel. 

Honing is fast, accurate and can be automated. It's surface quality and geometry can duplicate lapping, except for the longitudinal lines of the lapped finish. Honing is one of the processes used to make affordable, mass produced barrels that regularly hit MOA accuracies.

HTE Tube Hone

Sunnen's HTE-1600W Tube Hone is the company's first all-electric, cost-effective small diamenter hone designed specifically for small diameter/long bore length parts. The machine produces ideal bore geometry and surface finish on small, long diameter bores as small as 4 mm (0.15 in).

Another choice for gun barrel honing is the SH-4000 horizontal hone. This power-stroked machine merges a Siemens touchscreen PLC and digital servo drives with a patent pending servo-hybrid tool feed system for extreme repeatability and operator-friendly setups. The SH-4000 is engineered as an easy-to-use, flexible hone for medium to high production of parts with bore diameters from 1.5 to 102 mm (0.060" - 6.50").

Its patent-pending digital-servo tool feed and cutting pressure control ensures consistent, predictable performance throughout the pressure range. Cutting pressure can be adjusted in 4.5 N (1 lbf) increments to a maximum of 2,224 N (500 lbf). The digital system provides superior feed control at low pressures for improved honing results with small-diameter parts. The higher cutting pressure, plus two-step honing capability, ensures short cycle times. Two-step honing allows high stock removal coupled with a precise finish step, all in one operation.

SV-2152-3 (SV-2000 Series)

The three spindle SV-2152-3 can handle many gun barrel applications and has many features that will make the process more efficient.

With multiple spindles, three operations can run simultaneously - roughing, semi-finishing and finishing. The system is available with a custom loading operation for heavy workpieces. Optional air gaging can be integrated into the process to enhance process control and quality assurance.

The SV-2152-3 can handle bores up to 1200 mm (48 in) with a diameter range of  3 mm to 25 mm (0.12- 1.0 in).
